Watch: Needing 17 To Win In Super Over, Rinku Smashes 3 Consecutive Sixes

Whenever the name Rinku Singh is heard by a cricket fan, the flashback of him hitting 5 consecutive sixes against Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 match comes to the fore. Playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, Rinku did the unthinkable as he came up against Yash Dayal in the last over of the match. Playing for Meerut, Rinku did something similar, but this time in a Super Over decider, hitting three consecutive sixes to win the match for his side.

Meerut Mavericks were up against Kashi Rudras in the UP T20 league, and it was Rinku who turned into a match-winner for his team. With 17 runs required off the one-over eliminator, Rinku smashed a hat-trick of sixes as he came up against left-arm spinner Shiva Singh. The first ball didn't see Rinku fetch a single run but the next three deliveries took UP across the line. Here's the video:

Rinku hit the second ball of the over for a six over the long off. The KKR star, who has now also made his international debut for India, then hit another maximum at deep mid-wicket. For the winner, Rinku finished the game with another six over long off.

Earlier, the two teams' scores were tied in 20 overs after both scored 181 runs each. In the same match, Rinku had failed to impress during the 20-over-per-side contest, scoring just 15 runs off 22 balls. Yet, the UP franchise decided to send him out in the Super Over, and it's fair to say he didn't disappoint.

Rinku, having made his India debut in the T20 format, will also be witnessed wearing the national team's colours in the Asia Games which will be held later this month.

What Virat Kohli Has To Say About Pakistan Bowlers Ahead Of Asia Cup Clash

The time for an India vs Pakistan battle in the Asia Cup has arrived, with the two Asian giants set to square-off in the group stage of the tournament. More often than not, the event is dubbed as a contest between Pakistan's bowling and India's batting. Just like the cricketing universe, even India's batting talisman Virat Kohli is in awe of Pakistan's bowling attack. He Kohli feels one has to be at his absolute best to face a high-quality bowling attack like Pakistan's. The Indians have won their last three ODIs against Pakistan but the last one was played during the 2019 World Cup.

“I feel bowling is their strength. And they've got some really impactful bowlers that can change the course of the game anytime based on their skill set. So, you have to be at your absolute best to face them,” he told Star Sports ahead of the start of India's Asia Cup campaign.

Kohli has been in decent form in ODIs lately, having scripted 554 runs in 13 matches in the format since last December at a commendable average of 50.36. Talking about his approach lately, Kohli said, “I only try to understand how I can better my game. Every day, every practice session, every year, every season, this is what has helped me play this well for so long and to perform for my team.

"I don't think you can perform consistently without that mindset because if your performance is your only goal, then you can be satisfied and stop working hard. There is no limit to it.

"There is no set achievement that if you reach a certain stage, you've reached excellence. I think I strive for betterment every day, so that is a better word to use, and yes, performance obviously becomes a by-product because your mindset is ‘How do I make my team win from this position?'"

'Stick To Cricket You've Been Playing': Kallis' Advice For South Africa

South African cricketing legend Jacques Kallis remarked that the Proteas players should stick to their roles during the ICC Cricket World Cup in India and continue the manner in which they have been playing, pointing that past unsuccessful campaigns were because the players "wanted it too much" and "went outside their roles" because of it. South African legends Kallis and Faf du Plessis have shared their thoughts on how the Proteas could fare at the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.

South Africa heads into the marquee tournament in India with a nice blend of youth and experience to pick from. They have never ever won a major ICC World Championship despite featuring some of cricket's most exciting and talented stars in their squad over the years.

When the selectors gather to pick their squad for the World Cup, they will have exciting young talents in Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs and Gerald Coetzee to pick from alongside seasoned campaigners like Quinton de Kock, Kagiso Rabada, Temba Bavuma and David Miller.

As good as the squad will be, the legendary all-rounder Kallis, speaking exclusively to the ICC, said the key for South Africa would be to stay true to their brand of cricket.

"The one thing that needs to change for South Africa to be successful in a Cricket World Cup is to carry on playing the cricket that we've played going into the World Cup," he said as quoted by ICC.

"We have a history of playing good cricket leading into the World Cup. For some reason, things change. Maybe we want it too much. I think players wanted too much and you have gone outside of the area you need to be doing. Maybe going outside of their roles because they wanted too much," he added.

Kallis had a valuable piece of advice for the current crop of players: "Stick to your roles. Trust the partner next to you. And just play the cricket you have been playing."

Kallis believes South Africa's traditional strength - their pace attack - will once again be key for their hopes.

"South Africa's strength to me is going to be in our bowling attack. We have got some quality pace bowlers that can blow away the opposition's top-order. And I think they are going to play a major role if South Africa are going to get far, if we do get far (in the tournament)," he said.

Kallis' optimism was matched by former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis.

"South Africa's white-ball team is in a strong place. They have got some real experience going into that World Cup," he added.

Du Plessis, however, did warn that adapting to the conditions in the sub-continent would be the biggest challenge for Temba Bavuma's men.

"The challenge for all teams that are not from the subcontinent is obviously always the challenge of going to the subcontinent," he said.

"Especially 50-over cricket. I find with T20 cricket, the surfaces are a bit more even. And you get some really good pitches. With 50-over cricket, you can get that wear and tear and the spinners really come into their own."

Du Plessis however added that the home team, India, and serial winners Australia would be the teams to beat.

"I think South Africa has got a really good side. It will be hard to get past a team like India in home conditions. The other team you can never write off is Australia, with them being so successful in ICC events," he concluded.

"No Sense At All": PCB Blasted By Pak Greats For No Host Name On Jerseys

Pakistan Cricket Board is facing strong criticism from fans and a few former players over the omission of country's name on the official Asia Cup logo on participating teams' jerseys. Former captain Rashid Latif was among those who lashed out at the board soon after the Pakistan team took the field against Nepal in the opening match of the Asia Cup in Multan on Wednesday. Though Asia Cup is jointly staged by Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the former is the host of the tournament. “This is unacceptable and it is the Asian Cricket Council which must explain this oversight since the Asia Cup is their property,” he said. Since the hue and cry, PCB unofficially has tried to play down the situation by saying that the ACC had taken a decision after last year's Asia Cup that the host country's name would not be given with the Asia Cup logo in future events.

But most Pakistani cricket fans on social media are not willing to accept this explanation. Some have even questioned that even if the ACC had taken such a decision, why did the PCB agree to it since Pakistan was hosting a multi-team event after 15-years.

“Makes no sense at all. Then why has the ACC given the host country's name on the logos for their Asian Emerging Nations Cup or their Asian under-16 event held in July in Malaysia,” former Test batsman Mohsin Khan questioned.

Mohsin Khan said the ACC should clear the confusion.

Another former player who didn't want to be named believes that Jay Shah, the President of the ACC and secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), was the reason for Pakistan not being acknowledged as the host nation on the official logo.

“Given the current scenario between the two countries perhaps the BCCI official felt it would be embarrassing for the Indian team players to wear kits with the name of Pakistan on the official Asia Cup logo,” he said.

Rashid Latif didn't rule out this possibility and said what had happened was embarrassing and needed to be clarified.

New Captain Mitchell Marsh Leads Australia To Crushing Win

New captain Mitchell Marsh led a powerful Australian batting performance and set up a crushing 111-run win in the first T20I against South Africa at Kingsmead on Wednesday. Marsh clubbed a T20 career-best 92 not out off 49 balls as Australia piled up 226 for six after being sent in. Opening batsman Reeza Hendricks hit 56 for South Africa but the hosts were bowled out for 115. Debutant leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha took four for 31 after receiving a late call-up when Adam Zampa fell ill.

"He's a fantastic young talent," said Marsh.

Both sides were missing several key players.

Australia went on an all-out attack, with Marsh slamming 20 runs off the second over, bowled by Lungi Ngidi.

New cap Matt Short (20) and Tim David (64) shared stands of 63 off 26 balls for the second wicket and 97 off 50 deliveries for the fifth wicket with Marsh.

"I thought Tim was fantastic. It was a really good partnership," said Marsh.

There were 11 sixes in the Australian innings, with both Marsh and David hitting the ball out of the ground and into a road over Kingsmead's old main stand on the leg side.

The Australian onslaught meant that South Africa needed to mount a record second-innings chase. It never looked likely after Marcus Stoinis bowled Temba Bavuma in a first over which cost only one run.

"It's been an interval since we last played and it showed tonight," said South African captain Aiden Markram.

The next two T20 matches, both to be played again in Durban, take place on Friday and Sunday.

"Expose Kohli...": WC Winner On Where India-Pakistan Contest Will Be Won

The cricket world is waiting with baited breath for the mega India vs Pakistan coach at the Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka on Saturday. The match will be a closely watched affair as will be the individual performance Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma ahead of the Cricket World Cup. The performance in the Asia Cup 2023 will be a great indicator of where the form of the players lie ahead of the Cricket World Cup. Brad Hogg, former Cricket World Cup-winning Australian leg spinner, believes the contest between Shaheen Shah Afridi and the Indian cricket team top order will decide the fate of the marquee India vs Pakistan clash.

India will play their opening match against Pakistan on September 2 at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. Hogg said that he would be watching the star-studded clash and the contest could be decided between India's experienced batters and Pakistan's fast-bowling prowess.

"I definitely will be watching it. It is one of the biggest contests that we can have. Look, politics gets in the way of sports everywhere. It's here in Australia, England everywhere. We are just missing the rivalry between the two countries on the cricket field. It will be better for Pakistan as well because they will get the exposure. We want those contests to happen. India has a more dominant batting. Pakistan with their pace attack has a slight advantage, especially with left arm Shaheen Afridi. He is a quality bowler. When you have a left-arm fast bowler who swings the ball with pace and gets them to come in for the right-handers it does make it difficult," said Hogg on Backstage with Boria.

On being asked to comment on the battle between Shaheen Shah Afridi and Rohit Sharma, Hogg said, "I think Shaheen will have a chance with the deliveries that come in against right-handers. If Pakistan can expose Virat Kohli early in the contest against the new ball in front of Shaheen Afridi. The contest between Shaheen against the Indian top three will be decisive. So, for me, that's going to be where the game will be won and lost between India and Pakistan."

Bangladesh Star Litton Das Ruled Out Of Asia Cup 2023

Bangladesh was dealt a significant blow on the opening day of the Asia Cup 2023, as star wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das has been ruled out for the entire duration of the tournament. Litton has been ruled out of the 2023 Asia Cup after he was unable to recover from a viral fever. He did not travel to Sri Lanka for Bangladesh's opening match in Pallekele.

"The National Selection Panel of BCB has named 30-year-old fellow right-hander Anamul Haque Bijoy as Litton's replacement," the Bangladesh Cricket Board said in an official statement.

Anamul Haque has played 44 ODIs and has scored 1254 runs which include three hundreds. His last ODI appearance for Bangladesh was in December last year against India. He is due to arrive in Sri Lanka to join the Bangladesh team later on Wednesday.

The Chairman of the National Selection Panel, Minhajul Abedin, commented on replacing Das with a like-to-like replacement: “He (Anamul) has been among the runs in domestic cricket and we have continued to monitor him in the Bangladesh Tigers programme. He was always in our consideration."

“Due to Litton's unavailability, we needed a top-order batter who could keep wicket and Anamul got the nod” the BCB said.

Bangladesh will begin their Asia Cup campaign against tournament co-hosts Sri Lanka on Thursday in Pallekele, Kandy.

Squad: Shakib Al Hasan (Captain), Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tawhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, Afif Hossain Dhrubo, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Hasan Mahmud, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, Nasum Ahmed, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Naim Sheikh, Shamim Hossain, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Anamul Haque Bijoy.

The Asia Cup 2023 is all set to begin, with the opening match taking place between Pakistan and Nepal on August 30. The first match of the tournament will be held at the Multan Cricket Stadium but before the event begins, the tournament's curtain-raiser event will see some glittery performances. The opening ceremony will feature Pakistani singer Aima Baig and Nepal's Trishala Gurung looking to set the stage on fire.

Though Pakistan were the sole hosts for the Asia Cup 2023, the Indian team's refusal to travel to the country for the event saw more than half of the matches being shifted to Sri Lanka. However, it was revealed by the Pakistan Cricket Board chief that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Roger Binny and vice-president Rajiv Shukla will be coming to Pakistan to attend the opening ceremony.

Who will perform in the Asia Cup 2023 Opening Ceremony?

It has been reported that Pakistani singer Aima Baig and Nepali singer Trishala Gurung, among a few others will be performing at the Asia Cup 2023 Opening Ceremony. Biag has over 6 million followers on Instagram and is a famous singer in Pakistan. As for Tishala, she has also delivered some hit numbers in Nepal, and has a fan following of over 239,000 on Instagram.

The official Twitter (now 'X') of the Pakistan cricket team announced on Tuesday that the opening ceremony will start at 2:00 PM (Pakistan time).

"Witness the Super 11 Asia Cup 2023 curtain-raiser live on 30 August at the Multan Cricket Stadium Enjoy live fireworks and performances by Aima Baig and Nepal's Trishala Gurung, followed by the opening match between Pakistan and Nepal," the post from PCB read.

"If Babar And Rizwan Fire...": Ashwin Fires Firm Warning To Asia Cup Teams

As the Asia Cup 2023 begins, it's the India and Pakistan teams that are being considered the 'favourites' for the title. Though it was the Sri Lankan team that won the title last time around (in the T20 version of the tournament), India and Pakistan are being seen as the two outright favourites. While the Indian team has won the tournament, in the ODI version, the most number of times, Pakistan have really pulled their socks up in the last few years. Veteran Indian spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, in his preview for the Asia Cup 2023, tried to decode the rise of the Paksitan team over the last 5-6 years, and what makes them favourites this year, alongside the Indian team.

"I used to envy looking at the Pakistan side. 5-6 years back, they used to struggle in big tournaments like Asia Cup and World Cup. Yes, of course, they have won big tournaments in the past. They have won the 1992 World Cup and delivered a consistent performance in the T20 World Cup. The main reason for the last 5-6 years' rise can be attributed to Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan," Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel.

In fact, Ashwin also credited Pakistani players' experience of playing in different conditions all across the globe as a major reason behind their improved ability to deliver on big stages.

"It all comes down to their squad depth. Pakistan have always produced extraordinary cricketers. because of tape ball cricket, they have always had fast bowlers coming through their ranks. Their batting has been special in the late 90s and 2000s. But their exposure to different leagues has been a major reason for their re-emergence in the last 5-6 years. They have PSL. In the recent BBL drafts they were at least 60-70 Pakistan players.

They are playing Test cricket and play their own T20 leagues. But they are also playing all around the world in England and Australia, and this year there aren't many Pakistan players in CPL, but they always dominate CPL too. They play in the Emirati League, USA, and also in Canada. When talent meets opportunity with different exposures. In IPL, we make sure that talent meets opportunity and that's why we are seeing more cricketers from different regions," Ashwin explained.

"That's why in the last 5-6 years, Pakistan are not only producing world-class cricketers but these talents are only delivering in the big stages."

Ashwin feels if Babar Azam and Mohamad Rizwan remain on song in the coming months, it would be tough to be Pakistan in the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup.

"If Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan gives consistent performances with the bat in the middle-order,

then Pakistan are going to be one hell of a team going into this Asia Cup and World Cup. It will take some beating. Pakistan is an exceptional side.

"This year's Asia Cup's most games will be played in Sri Lanka. Who else are more equipped for Sri Lankan conditions than Pakistan? Because almost all the foreigners in the Lanka Premier League are Pakistanis," he asserted.

Bumrah Won't Be Used At Full Throttle In Asia Cup? Dravid Reveals Approach

The return of Jasprit Bumrah has been the biggest news in Indian cricket in recent times. The ace pacer, once the bowling spearhead of team team, had been out of action by lower back injury and subsequent rehabilitation for the last 11 months. However, his comeback against Ireland in the T20I series had Indian cricket fans going gaga over his return. A big test awaits for him in the form of Asia Cup and the World Cup.

Playing a T20I match, where a maximum of four overs can be bowler by a player, and an ODI match, where the strike bowler of the team is expected to bowl 10 intense overs is different. Indian cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid, in his pre-departure press conference before boarding a flight to Sri Lanka, hinted that Bumrah will be slowed eased into full action.

"It's great to have them (Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna) back and see them bowling well. Jasprit is someone we have missed a lot in the past two years he hasn't played much. We will ease him into it slowly. Ireland was a good opportunity to ease him in. Now we have a whole month to build that up before the World Cup. The duo's return gives us more options in the pace bowling department," he said.

Home advantage not there?

The former India captain also felt that the home advantage for the sub-continent teams has reduced significantly in the last decade, owing to foreign players regularly competing in the conditions, with IPL a major draw.

"The whole thing of home advantage at sub-continent has reduced to a large extent over the past 10-12 years. People come and play here so much, especially tournaments like the IPL. They are here for two-three months getting used to conditions. It will be a tight tournament," Dravid said.

Pakistan Announce Playing XI For Asia Cup 2023 Opener Against Nepal

Pakistan have named their playing XI for the opening game of the Asia Cup against Nepal in Multan on Wednesday. With Nepal as their opponent in the opening game of the 2023 Asia Cup, Pakistan has prioritised batting depth. Pakistan has many bowling options with three frontline quicks and three all-rounders who can bowl spin. The team made a few adjustments from the starting lineup against Afghanistan in the final ODI in Colombo. While Saud Shakeel moves to the middle order, Iftikhar Ahmed takes his place. Pakistan chose to go with Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Haris Rauf, leaving no opportunity for pacer Mohammad Wasim.

Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz will be aided by Salman Agha in the spin department.

The batting line-up has a familiar look with Iftikhar coming back into the middle-order after missing the final ODI against Afghanistan.

Pakistan XI: Babar Azam (c), Fakhar Zaman, Imam ul Haq, Mohammad Rizwan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Salman Agha, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf.

BCCI President To Attend Asia Cup 2023 Opening Ceremony In Pakistan: PCB

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) boss has confirmed that The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Roger Binny is set to travel across the border to attend the opening ceremony of the Asia Cup, which begins on August 30. While PCB remains the host for this edition's Asia Cup, the tournament will only partly be held in Pakistan, with the majority of the matches scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka. Such a format was set up over the BCCI's reluctance to send its players to Pakistan for the tournament, over security issues. But, the BCCI president Roger Binny and vice-president Rajiv Shukla have accepted the Pakistan board's proposal of hosting them in Multan on the opening day of the tournament.

"BCCI President and Vice President are coming to Pakistan for the opening ceremony of Asia Cup," Zaka Ashraf said, according to Pakistan media. "We welcome everyone who is coming to Pakistan [during Asia Cup]".

The Pakistan board chief's comments came on the occasion of the jersey launch of the men's national ODI team. Ashraf also expressed faith on his team's ability to emerge successful in both the Asia Cup and the forthcoming World Cup.

"Our team is currently united and performing well, and consequently is number one in the ODI team rankings," he said.

"Looking at the recent performances of the team, it is hoped that our team will be successful in the World Cup, however, at the moment all the attention is focused on the Asia Cup," he added.

The PCB boss also shed some light on the team's new ODI jersey.

"The Star Nation Jersey bears witness to the enduring bond between our cricketers and the passionate fans who stand by them through every match. This jersey encapsulates our rich cricketing heritage and the luminous future that awaits," he said.

"You Are Judged By...": Gavaskar's Blunt Take On Rohit Sharma's Captaincy

India captain Rohit Sharma has his legacy as a skipper hanging in balance, with the national set to embark upon two adventurous journeys in the Asia Cup and the ODI World Cup. India's failure to win an ICC title over the last decade has seen a plethora of changes in the leadership role being made. Virat Kohli took the Indian team to new heights but couldn't bag an ICC title as a skipper. When India legend Sunil Gavaskar was asked about Rohit's legacy as a skipper, he said the Hitman would be judged by the number of trophies he would win.

"At the end of the day you are judged by the number of trophies you have won, the numbers of wins you have. Winning these two tournaments will make him one of India's greatest skippers," Gavaskar was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

Gavaskar shared his opinion on the Indian team's preparedness for the World Cup too. While many experts feel the No. 4 conundrum is one of the team's biggest problems in the ODI format, Gavaskar feels it's the lack of all-rounders that remains a pain point.

"More than anything else, luck of the day is very important and if you look at the teams (in 1983, 1985 and 2011), they all had top class all-rounders. You had batters who could bowl 7-8-9 overs and bowlers who could bat down the order. That was the biggest plus of those teams. You see MSD's team also: Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag could all bowl. It was the biggest plus. So, any team which has all-rounders (will hold the edge).

"You look at England who won last year's T20 World Cup, look at the all-rounders they had. So, all-rounders are the key element," said the 1983 World Cup-winning.

Gavaskar also feels India need a little bit of luck to go all the way in the tournament. Citing the example of the 2019 semi-final clash against New Zealand, the legendary cricketer said had the match ended in a single day, things could've been different for Kohli's men.

"We have got immense talent, (but) in the knockout stage you need a little bit of luck on the day. If you look at our situation in the knockout stages where we have lost, we had ill-luck just about every time.

"At the last World Cup (2019) we had a match (semifinal versus New Zealand) which stretched into the second day. If it had gone the proper full day we might have had a different story, because the next day it was seaming conditions and the New Zealand bowlers could bowl well. So, I think you need a little bit of luck on the day. I mean there are four-five very good teams, so you need luck on the day."

Team India's SWOT Analysis: Are Rohit's Men Prepared For Asia Cup 2023?

The Rohit Sharma-led Indian cricket team will start its Asia Cup campaign in a high-voltage clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 2. Apart from having a big emotional value, the match starts the final phase of preparation for the team ahead of the ODI World Cup at home. India's squad for the Asia Cup is almost on expected lines with two players - KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer - inducted straightway after making a comeback from injury. Sanju Samson has been named as the back-up player, with Rahul still carrying a niggle, according to BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

NDTV analyses the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats for the Indian cricket team ahead of the Pakistan clash.

INDIA'S STRENGTHS

# A set top-three

Indian top-3 are set and as a group is one of the strongest in the world. India are expected to open with Captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Rohit is one of the best openers in the world whereas Shubman Gill has been in amazing form in ODIs since 2022. Gill is the highest-ranked batter in the Asia Cup squad. He is 5th in the latest ICC ODI batting ranking.

Rohit is the only opener to average 50+ in ODI after scoring 3000+ runs, while Gill has the highest average (69.4) in ODI since 2022 (MIN: 500 Runs).

Virat Kohli is 102 runs away from scoring 13000 runs in ODI. He will become the 5th player in ODI to score 13000 or more runs.  Also, Kohli has the best average (57.3) among batters to score 10000+ runs in ODI. He is one of the 2 batters to average 50+ in ODI after scoring 10000+ runs, other being MS Dhoni who averages 50.6. He has the 2nd most centuries (46) in ODI after Sachin Tendulkar who has 49.

# Pace prowess

Indian pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah is back for India after more than a year in ODIs. Bumrah last played an ODI for India on July 14th, 2022. Bumrah has the 3rd best bowling average (24.3) among active pace bowlers in ODI (MIN: 100 Wickets).  Furthermore, Indian pacers have the joint best bowling average in ODI since 2022. Even without Bumrah Indian pacers were great and addition of Bumrah will be an added benefit to the bowling unit in ODI. Indian bowlers have done well in ODI since 2022 and both pacers and the spinners have been in great form in ODI since 2022.

WEAKNESS

# Not a settled middle order?

The number 4 spot has been a reason of bother for India since the ICC 2019 Cricket World Cup. India have tried out many players at the number 4 spot, but it has not worked out. Shreyas Iyer has scored 805 runs while batting at number 4 for India since 2019 ICC World Cup. However, he is returning to international cricket after an injury.

Another option for number 4 spot is Surya Kumar Yadav but he has scored 30 runs in 5 innings at the number 4 spot. Furthermore, Suryakumar Yadav in ODI has not been impressive. He is averaging 24.3 in ODI and has scored 511 runs in 24 innings.

Another concern is KL Rahul's fitness.  KL Rahul is India's leading run scorer while batting in the middle order since 2019 ICC CWC. However, he is also coming after an injury and will miss out first few matches of the Asia Cup with a niggle meaning Ishan Kishan will keep wickets for India.

Ishan Kishan has scored 106 runs in 6 innings in the middle order. But Ishan Kishan was used as an opener in the recent ODI series vs WI when India had the option to try him in the middle order. Also, India have added another new face in the squad for middle order i.e., Tilak Varma. He has made it to the Asia Cup squad after an impressive T20I series against WI and impressive IPL season.
o     But he has no experience while batting in the middle order in ODI and being called up to the squad before the World Cup ahead of the likes of Sanju Samson who has been named as the reserve player is shocking.

OPPORTUNITY

# Number 4 position

There are various opportunities for players at number 4 to seal their spot for the World Cup 2023 with an impressive Asia Cup. Shreyas Iyer, who has been India's best number 4, since 2019 ICC CWC will look to cement his place in the playing XI. However, if Iyer is not fit enough and if he fails at the number 4 spot then we might see players like Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma given a chance at this spot.

#Wicket-Keeping spot

If KL Rahul is fit enough, then his place in Indian playing XI as a wicket keeper batter is almost guaranteed.  KL Rahul is the only Indian batter to average 50+ while batting in the middle order since 2019 ICC CWC (MIN: 500 Runs)However, if KL Rahul is not fit enough and there might be fitness concerns after an injury then this place is up for grabs for the likes of Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson.

Ishan Kishan is expected to start in the playing XI as Rahul will miss the first 2-3 matches in the Asia Cup 2023. If Ishan Kishan performs then we might see KL Rahul out for a long time.

THREATS

# Players returning to the squad after injuries. The form for players returning from injuries is unknown and they might take some time to regain full match fitness.

# Lack of batting depth for India is also a concern.  There is no high-profile replacement in the squad for Hardik Pandya. If the fast-bowling allrounder is injured their is no like-for-like replacement who can deliver with same intensity.

Ben Stokes Set To Play As Batter Only At ICC World Cup After ODI U-Turn

England are prepared to play Ben Stokes as a batsman only when they defend their 50-over men's World Cup title in India after the Test captain reversed his decision to retire from one-day internationals. The all-rounder, troubled by a longstanding left knee injury that restricted his bowling during the recent drawn Ashes Test series at home to Australia, said playing in all three international formats was "unsustainable" when calling time on his ODI career 13 months ago. The 32-year-old had planned to use a six-month gap until England next play Test cricket, away to India, in order to attend to his chronic problem.

But he is now set for a role as a specialist batsman as one of nine survivors named in a 15-man squad to face New Zealand in three home ODIs next month that is also set to double as England's party for a World Cup in India that runs from October 5-November 19.

"It wasn't really a case of changing his (Stokes's) mind," said England national selector Luke Wright after the squad was unveiled on Wednesday.

"Once his body was in a good place and he'd had a rest, he was really keen to play. He still has time to do his rest and rehab, which he's doing, and he says his knee does feel like it's improving.

"The one thing we won't be doing is pushing him to bowl unless he's absolutely fit and raring to go. That was a big part of the decision for him, being able to just play as a batter and that was an easy decision for us.

"Ultimately the decision came down to it's a World Cup we want to win and we feel like we are better, and have more chance, with Stokesy than we haven't. If ever there's someone for the big moments it's Ben Stokes."

The return of Stokes, the player of the match in the 2019 World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord's and the man whose unbeaten fifty led his side to victory in the Twenty20 equivalent last year, comes at the expense of Harry Brook.

The Yorkshire batsman has been the rising star of the England set-up during the past year, with the 24-year-old having compiled four hundreds in 12 Tests, while boasting strike rates of 98.85 and 137.77 in ODIs and T20s respectively.

"It's as hard a decision as you're ever going to get," said Wright, who labelled Brook a "superstar" before adding: "But unfortunately in a 15-man squad, someone's going to have to miss out. On this occasion it's been him."

Uncapped Surrey fast bowler Gus Atkinson, who has been cloked at 95 mph (153 kph), is also in the squad, seemingly as cover for Jofra Archer.

The injured Archer, the Super Over star of the 2019 World Cup final, is currently recovering from his latest elbow injury.

Archer last played for England in March and Wright, once a team-mate of the 28-year-old at county side Sussex, said: "There has got to be a duty of care with Jof, we know how desperate we all are to have him, there's no doubt about that, but we've also got to get it right for him.

"As much as the temptation is to try and rush him in and get him in for the start of this World Cup, unfortunately we're just going to run out of time.

"The best case scenario for Jof at the moment would probably be available for the back end of the tournament. But obviously, a lot of things have still got to go right with his rehab before then."

New Zealand Give Kane Williamson Two Weeks To Prove World Cup Fitness

New Zealand have given captain Kane Williamson a two-week deadline to prove his fitness for the one-day World Cup starting in October, head coach Gary Stead said Monday. The batsman tore the cruciate ligaments in his right knee playing for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League in April. The 33-year-old has recovered well and is batting in the nets, with a place in New Zealand's 15-man squad now in sight. "We've got about two weeks from now until we name that side," Stead told New Zealand media.

"We're going to give him every chance to use that full amount of time. He's in full rehab mode, he's back batting in the nets again, which is great to see.

"He's progressing really well, but there's a lot of work for him still to do to make sure he gets where we need him to be."

Williamson has scored more than 6,500 runs in one-day international cricket and led New Zealand in their nail-biting defeat to England in the 2019 World Cup final.

New Zealand play England in their opening game of the World Cup in Ahmedabad on October 5.

As part of his recovery bid, Williamson is with the squad on their white-ball tour of England.

"Of course we want him at the World Cup, but there is that bigger picture that we want Kane Williamson fit for the rest of his career," added Stead.

"There will be honest conversations that Kane and I will have around exactly where he is at."

All-rounder James Neesham has withdrawn from the Twenty 20 squad for the series against England, which starts Wednesday, to return home ahead of the birth of his first child.

"Captaincy Not Based On Personal Likes": Rohit Sharma On World Cup Squad

Rohit Sharma understands the gargantuan pressure that a home World Cup brings but the Indian captain wants to insulate himself from the outside chatter as he embarks on an arduous journey to win the country's first ICC trophy in a decade. Shouldering more than a billion hopes, the 36-year-old India skipper knows what's at stake in the ODI World Cup, which starts October 5 with England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

"For me, it is important how I keep myself relaxed and not worry about external factors that play a role, whether positively or not negatively. I want to shut out everything," Rohit told PTI in an exclusive interview just before joining the Asia Cup camp in Benglauru.

"I want to get into the phase I was in before the 2019 World Cup,” said Rohit, who carries an aura of Zen even in the most tense of situations.

The same calm was visible as he put across his point of view in an uncomplicated manner during the interview, just like the straight face of his bat when he hits the bowler's back-drive.

"I was in great frame of mind and prepared really well for the tournament," he said referring to the last edition, where he scored 648 runs with an unprecedented five hundreds to emerge as the highest run-getter.

"I was in good shape, good mindset. I want to bring that back and I have time to do that. Trying to recollect what were the right things that I was doing before the 2019 World Cup as a cricketer and as a person. I want to revisit that thought-process of mine personally," the skipper said.

World Cups and the vagaries associated with the results can change a lot of things but for Rohit, one month of cricket can't make or break the player that he is.

"A person can't change overnight with his success or failures," he said.

"I don't think one result or one championship can change me as a person. I have not changed as a person in the last 16 years and I don't think anything needs to change on that front," he said.

"The focus will be on how I can achieve my goals in the next two months, for me and my team. A person can't change in a period of one or two months." Rohit has won five IPL titles as Mumbai Indians captain, Asia Cup as India captain (2018) and led the team to World Test Championship final as recently as June this year.

Do you ever think about your legacy in Indian cricket after being around for 16 years? "No," pat came the reply. "I am not the person who thinks about what kind of legacy I will leave behind. My legacy will be for people to judge and talk about. Not for me to say." He has 30 ODI hundreds, second only to Virat Kohli's 46. Add 10 Test hundreds and four T20I tons. A total of 17,000 plus international runs aren't bad numbers.

"I am not a firm believer in numbers. You should be happy and enjoy the time you have in-front of you, and try to live in that kind of moment. I am thinking about what gives me happiness," he added.

"For me, it's all about creating memories and creating a good rapport with my teammates. Be happy in whatever you get and whatever you have."

TEAM SELECTION HEARTBREAKS

Rohit will have an unenviable task of telling at least three out of 18 members of the core group that they won't be a part of World Cup's exclusive 15.

There is a sense of déjà vu. When he was 23, Rohit didn't get a look-in in that history-making 'Class of 2011'. It had hurt, back then and no one knows that better than him.

"While picking the best combination, there will be guys who will miss out for various reasons and Rahul bhai (Dravid) and I have tried our best to explain to the players why they are not in the squad." "We have tried to communicate with the players after every selection and playing XI that has been announced. We talk to them face to face, one-on-one why they have not been picked," he said.

"Sometimes, I try and put myself in their shoes. When I wasn't picked in 2011, it was such a heart-breaking moment for me and I felt what's left after being dropped from a World Cup squad?" He had no qualms in admitting that at times his and Dravid's decision can go wrong. "Me, coaches, and selectors, take into account all factors like opposition, surfaces, our strengths, their weaknesses, and then reach a common ground. There is every chance that we will not be perfect always.

"At the end of the day, few individuals make decisions, and we are bound to make mistakes as humans. We won't always be right," he added with a pause.

Rohit feels that he "needs to keep an open mind" and listen to everyone's view and what other people around him are thinking.

"It's not like, I don't like this person, so I am dropping him. Captaincy is not based on personal likes and dislikes. If anyone misses out, there is a reason for it. If you are the unlucky one, we can do nothing." So who was the one who put an arm around his shoulder after the 2011 World Cup team was announced? "I was sad and sitting in my room and didn't know what to do next. I remember Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) calling me to his room and taking me out for dinner.

"He explained to me how it feels when you are left out. He told me, 'the best thing is that you have so many years in-front of you. As we play in the World Cup, you take this chance to work hard on your game, skills and make a comeback. There is no way that you won't play for India or not get a chance to play in the World Cup'." Skipper MS Dhoni and selectors felt that an additional wrist spinner in Piyush Chawla would be more useful than an extra batter back in 2011.

"I went back to the drawing board, worked hard and immediately after the World Cup, I made a comeback and it has been good since then. Since this is me, who has gone through this emotion, no one can tell me that "easier said than done".

"I have faced exclusion in a World Cup, and I know how it exactly feels.”

Batter Rohit, the pull-shots and the risks taken

If there is one shot that has become 'signature Rohit' over the years, it is the pull-shot that he has played mostly with success, though at times it does bring about his downfall.

So how much does he practice the pull in the nets against throwdown experts? "There is no specific training I do to play that shot. Nobody knows about the work I did before that.

"Raghu (Raghvendra), Nuwan (Senaviratne) and Daya (Garani) have all come in recent years and I have been playing this shot for a long time, he said, referring to the three support staff members.

"I have worked on this shot since U-17 and U-19 days. Now I don't practice this shot specifically during the training. If I find a ball pitched short, I play the pull. The bowlers are not just going to bowl short, so during training I tell bowlers to bowl everything in a manner they want."

"Kohli Of Old": Windies Great Praises Legendary Batter's Return To Form

Former West Indies pacer Curtly Ambrose feels that India's legendary batter Virat Kohli is back in his groove. He added that the player could serve the Indian cricket for the next couple of years. 34-year-old Kohli, whose form dipped in the first half of the year 2022, has improved his performance noticeably since the Asia Cup last year. Kohli's rise in international cricket continues and he is now the batter with second-highest number of international centuries (76) following Sachin Tendulkar, who is at the helm with 100 tons at the highest level.

"He's still a very good cricketer, a quality batsman. Every great batsman goes through patches where they struggle to score runs. I can't think of any great batsman who never struggled in international cricket. Virat is a special player. He's had his time where he has struggled a bit but he seems to be getting back into form," Ambrose told RevSportz.

"He scored a half-century in the first Test against West Indies and then he scored a century. He looks to be in better form, more fluent and looks to be the Virat Kohli of old. He can still serve Indian cricket for a couple of years to come," he added.

Kohli played two Test matches in West Indies and scored 76 and 121 in the two innings he batted. He was rested after the first ODI of the three-match series in the Caribbean islands, while he was not named in the five-match T20I series that followed.

The batter will be seen in action next in the Asia Cup, starting August 30.

Australia's Glenn Maxwell Aggravates Injury Month Before World Cup 2023

Australia's star allrounder Glenn Maxwell is in a race against time as he continues to battle with a fresh injury with the ICC ODI World Cup just a month away. Maxwell ended up hurting his ankle during a training session in Durban while training for Australia's T20I series against South Africa on Wednesday and he will now fly home to be alongside his wife as they await the birth of their first child according to the ICC. Maxwell is expected to recover from his ankle injury in due time, but, national selector Tony Dodemaide has made it clear that no risks would be taken with the 34-year-old given his injury history that includes the freak leg injury he picked up at a friend's party late last year.

Yet, Dodemaide remains confident that Maxwell will be ready for Australia's ODI series against India next month.

"We will monitor Glenn's recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Cup," Dodemaide said as quoted by ICC.

Maxwell a quality all rounder has played 128 ODIs and scored 3490 runs at an average of 33.88 and a strike rate of 124.82. He has also taken 60 wickets with an economy rate of 5.56.

Maxwell's injury has opened the door of return for Matthew Wade who has earned a call back in the T20I squad for the series against South Africa and could provide another wicket-keeping option alongside Josh Inglis.

Maxwell is not the only absentee from Australia's T20I squad, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green and David Warner are on the sidelines as well.

Australia T20 squad to face South Africa: Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Matt Short, Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Turner, Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa.

Are India Favourites For Asia Cup? Pakistan Legend's 'Dangerous' Verdict

Pakistan bowling great Wasim Akram on Sunday said the upcoming Asia Cup will test readiness of subcontinental bowlers for 50-overs cricket ahead of the ODI World Cup, but refused to pick any favourites for the tournament. The Asia Cup begins on Wednesday with Pakistan taking on Nepal in the tournament-opener in Multan, but all eyes are fixed on the mega clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan in Kandy on September 2. "Be it India or Pakistan or Sri Lanka, we will find out if the bowlers are able to deliver 10 overs or not, now-a-days they are all used to bowling four-overs (per game)," Akram told reporters here during a tournament sponsor's event.

The competition will revert to 50-overs format in this edition after being organised in T20 version last year, and Akram welcomed the change.

"This is a good idea by ACC to have a 50-over Asia Cup because right after it we have the World Cup," he said.

Akram said all teams will be challenged on the parameters of fitness and game plans.

"It is a long tournament -- not a one-off that you can enter the semifinals after winning one game," he said.

"You have to win games to get on top. You have to take it game by game. Also, it is a 50-over competition (this time) not T20, which means different mindset and fitness will be required." The legendary pacer refused to predict any favourites but said the road will be tough for all sides.

"Last time we had predicted an India versus Pakistan final but Sri Lanka won the competition. All three teams are dangerous -- anyone can win on their day," Akram said.

"There are other teams competing too. Last time Sri Lanka won the title, India even failed to make it to the final.

"India versus Pakistan is very important, we know about so much support (teams get), so many eyeballs, so many people (following). But other teams are also here to play so you cannot minus Sri Lanka or Bangladesh," he added.

Akram said India have a balanced squad for the Asia Cup.

"I think they are trying different things, new players especially in the T20 format, also a new captain. They have a balanced squad. But it will not be easy for India or any team," he said.

Asked if Pakistan could have taken a strong stand against India for not travelling to the neighbouring nation for the Asia Cup, Akram played it safe.

"The Pakistan government has given permission that Pakistan (team) can travel to India," he said.

"I have always maintained and said that politics and sports should be apart from each other. People to people contact is very important and the average Indian and Pakistani, they do respect each other. I hope eventually sanity prevails." The second highest ODI wicket taker with 502 dismissals, Akram termed the Asia Cup as the "second biggest tournament" in the world.

"It is the second biggest tournament in the calendar of the cricketing world. (The) World Cups and then the Asia Cup, two giants, clash of the titans… two titans, India and Pakistan then Sri Lanka, the previous Asia Cup champions last year in Dubai -- what a success that was," he said.

"All six countries are looking forward to seeing their players. This is a prep tournament before the big one, the World Cup."

Watch: Kohli, Jadeja Toil Hard In Batting Practice Ahead of Asia Cup 2023

The Asia Cup 2023 is just around the corner and the Indian cricket team is toiling hard in the practice camp in Alur, Karnataka. In the past few days, batters were divided into pairs as part of a match simulation. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill were followed by the pair of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. In a video going viral on social media, Kohli was batting this time with Ravindra Jadeja as both the players faced spin bowling. It was most probably a part of match situation simulations and both players were looking to play sensible shots.

There were several questions over KL Rahul's fitness following his Asia Cup 2023 selection as chief selector Ajit Agarkar told the media that he was suffering from a slight niggle.

The call-up for the continental tournament was a big deal for the batter after a prolonged battle with injury but the update along with the inclusion of Sanju Samson as a back-up did not alleviate the fears. However, there was some good news for cricket fans as Rahul did wicket-keeping practice where he was helped by skipper Rohit Sharma at the ongoing practice camp in Alur, Karnataka.

Earlier, he also did some batting practice as he was paired with Suryakumar Yadav at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots respectively in a match simulation. India went for fixed pairings in the practice with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill followed by Virat Kohli and the returning Shreyas Iyer at No. 4.

India take on Pakistan in their first match of Asia up 2023 on September 2.

"Bolne Se Kuch Nahi Hota": Shadab On Agarkar's "Kohli Will Handle" Remark

The Asia Cup 2023 might be beginning on August 30, but it's the India vs Pakistan clash on September 02 that has everyone's attention. In fact, when the Indian squad for the Asia Cup was announced, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, was also asked about handling the esteemed pace attack of Pakistan. Agarkar responded saying "Virat Kohli will handle them". Now, Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan has responded to Agarkar's claim, saying it's only what one does on the field that matters and not what is being said before or after the match.

Kohli was responsible for India's victory over Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup league-stage match, with the iconic batter pulling of a win for the team almost single-handedly. While fans expect the same from Kohli in the upcoming Asia Cup, Shadab feels it's only that particular day when one would come to know what happens.

"Dekhiye, ye depend karta hai on a day. Main ya koi aur, ya unki taraf se koi aisa bol de, to bolne se kuch nahi hota, kuch change nahi hota. Jab match hoga, match mein jo cheezein nazar ayengi, asal cheez wahi hoti hai (See, it all depends on what happens that day. Me or someone else, or someone from their side, can say whatever they want. It doesn't make any difference. When the match takes place, then only we'll get to know what is the reality)," Shadab said, responding to a reporter's question.

Shadab was one of the key players for the Pakistan team that secured a 3-0 series sweep over Afghanistan. The result also helped them go top of the ICC ODI Rankings. With the Afghanistan assignment not over, Pakistan would shift focus to the Asia Cup, with their opening match scheduled on August 30 against Nepal.

"Always Has Been A...": Babar's Straight Take On India-Pakistan Rivalry

The Asia Cup 2023 is just round the corner and cricket fans around the world are waiting for the high-profile match between India and Pakistan. The two sides stopped playing bilateral series since 2012-13 and it is only at continental and international tournaments where the supporters can see these two sides face each other. Pakistan cricket team skipper Babar Azam opened up about the highly-anticipated match and how the two teams gear up for such a match. "The India-Pakistan match has always been a rivalry. The entire world experiences the match and enjoys it. Even we enjoy it a lot. I feel that the level of cricket is very good and competitive. Fans miss the India-Pakistan match and both teams always give their 100 percent," Babar said on Star Sports.

Earlier, former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar had his say on the comparisons between Babar and Indian cricket team star Virat Kohli.

“Absolutely, and we can expect that to happen again. Just one thing that you know people like Tendulkar and Virat Kohli have had to deal with that they've had long careers and they sort of have spanned over 10 15 years and anytime there's been a rising star, he's been compared to a guy who's been in the race for a long time. So sometimes it can be a little unfair but the greatness of these two guys is that they maintain that standard that the best performance of a rising player is equated with it,” Manjrekar said on Star Sports show ‘Game Plan'.

“Yes, both very good players. One obviously in his prime younger but coming to these kind of platform we want to say Virat Kohli and see with the format that we have here not the T20 format, Asia Cup this time round you might just see a bit Babar Azam and maybe show his place as well,” he added.

Pakistan Whitewash Afghanistan 3-0 To Top ODI rankings

Pakistan rose to the top of the one-day international rankings with a 59-run win against Afghanistan in the third and final match in Colombo on Saturday, claiming a 3-0 series whitewash. Pakistan were helped to 268-8 in 50 overs by a solid 79-ball 67 from Mohammad Rizwan and an 86-ball innings of 60 from skipper Babar Azam. They then dismissed their opponents for 209 in 48.4 overs with number nine Mujeeb Ur Rahman top-scoring for Afghanistan with a 37-ball 64 for his maiden half century. Rahman smashed five sixes and as many boundaries, racing to a new Afghan record for the fastest ODI fifty off just 26 balls before he stepped on to his stump and was out hit wicket off Shaheen Shah Afridi. Rashid Khan was the previous record holder for Afghanistan with a 27-ball fifty against Ireland in Abu Dhabi last year.

Rahman and Shahidullah Kamal (37 off 65 balls) shared a valiant stand of 57 for the eighth wicket to give some respectability to the total after their team were reeling at 97-7.

Rahman also added 45 for the ninth wicket with Fareed Ahmad Malik who scored 17.

Pakistan won the first match by 142 runs and by one wicket in the second -- both games played in Hambantota.

Pakistan had been at number two in the International Cricket Council ODI rankings before the series but the 3-0 triumph lifted them above Australia.

Pakistan were briefly number one earlier this year.

Pakistan medium pacer Faheem Ashraf removed Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who made a century in the last game, for five and Ibrahim Zadran for an 11-ball duck to finish with 2-43.

Pakistan rested frontline bowlers Haris Rauf and Naseem Shah in four changes but they were still good enough with the ball as spinners Shadab Khan (3-42) and Mohammad Nawaz (2-45) shared five wickets.

"Yes, we are number one," said Azam, who is also the number one batsman in the ODI rankings.

"All credit to boys. We have worked hard for the last of couple of months and it has taken us to this point, so I am really happy."

Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi admitted his team was not up to the mark.

"We didn't apply ourselves," said Shahidi. "We are disappointed with the performance but there is a lot of learning."

It was Rizwan and Azam who anchored Pakistan's innings after they won the toss and batted.

Rizwan hit six boundaries and a six while Azam knocked four boundaries and a six to help Pakistan to a fighting total.

The Rizwan-Azam pair added 110 runs for the third wicket to steady the innings after pacer Gulbadin Naib removed openers Fakhar Zaman (27) and Imam-ul-Haq (13).

Pakistan stuttered in the middle overs with four wickets lost for the addition of just 27 runs, including Azam's wicket who scored his 28th half century.

Saud Shakeel was run out for nine and Shadab for just three as Pakistan were struggling at 189-6.

Agha Salman (38 not out) and Nawaz (30) added 61 for the seventh wicket as Pakistan added 80 in the last ten overs.

Salman hit four boundaries and a six in his 31-ball quickfire knock.

Naib was the pick of Afghanistan bowlers with 2-36.

The two teams will now feature in the six-nation Asia Cup starting in Multan from August 30.

Five Cricketers Yet To Take Yo-yo Test Ahead Of Asia Cup. Bumrah And...

The Indian cricket team is in its final stages of preparation for the Asia Cup. They are currently attending a camp in Alur, Karnataka where they are taking yo-yo tests. Accoridnf to a report by news agency PTI, young opener Shubman Gill has topped with an impressive score of 18.7. All the cricketers who have so far appeared for the YoYo test have passed the cut-off level of 16.5 with Virat Kohli also putting up an impressive 17.2 as per his Instagram story.

Save the five cricketers -- Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson (reserve member for Asia Cup) and KL Rahul have all undergone the test.

The Asia Cup bound India team has hit the ground running with the closed-door camp in Alur, where the squad members are undergoing routine fitness tests ahead of the continental event beginning August 30.

"The YoYo test being an aerobic endurance fitness test, the results could vary from when you last played and how much of workload you have gone through in the past week.

"Gill as of now has the highest score of 18.7. Most of the players have scored between 16.5 and 18," a BCCI source privy to developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

The fitness cum conditioning camp has been organised by the BCCI as this was the only window before the World Cup at home in October.

"If the players have a gap between two tournaments, the National Cricket Academy's sports science team along with sports staff of India team does conduct all the mandatory tests," the source said.

When the YoYo tests were introduced six years back during the time of erstwhile Strength & Conditioning coach Shankar Basu, the cut-off was 16.1 but since then the marker has been upgraded and it is 16.5 now.

Most of the young Indian players are very fit nowadays. Gill's 18.7 is a testament to that considering that he has played non-stop cricket since the start of IPL.

The first big break he got since March was the three weeks after completion of the 50-over series in the West Indies.

"Kaun Dieting Pe Hai": Dhoni's Cheeky Chat With Gym Buddies Viral. Watch

MS Dhoni is a champion of the masses. His rise from Ranchi to being the greatest Indian cricket team captain is a stuff of legends. There is no other more successful captain in the Indian cricket team than Dhoni. With three ICC titles as skipper, Dhoni is among the top captain ever in the world. While he has quit international cricket, he continues to lead Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. There too, he is the most successful captain as his team won the fifth title this year, to equal Mumbai Indians' record.

Recently, Dhoni has been training hard. In a recent video from his gym, he can be seen in a joyful mood. In the video, Dhoni can be seen cutting cakes. the captain of the video read that Dhoni and his gym budding were celebrating CSK's IPL win.

"Hum khilayenge (I will serve). Kaun kaun kha Raha hai Aur kaun kaun dieting pe he vo batao (who's dieting and who's eating, first tell me that)" Dhoni can be heard telling in the video.

Recently, Gautam Gambhir once again reiterated that MS Dhoni's innings wasn't alone responsible for India's triumph in the World Cup. The cricketer-turned-politician even blamed social media for this perception, saying it is 'biased' on such subjects.

"While we celebrate MS Dhoni's innings in the final, we should celebrate these other efforts as much. No one innings could win India the trophy. It was a collective effort, and should be celebrated as such. It is because of social media that we don't do it. Social media is biased and we all know that. But social media doesn't make it the truth. There is always a tendency on social media to celebrate individuals more than the team. In doing so, what happens is we don't celebrate key performers who had as much a part to play. And that's an issue for sure. All I will say is we should celebrate the entire team. While we celebrate Dhoni, we should also celebrate the others who all played very important roles in the Indian win," he explained.

"Whether He Would Like...": Virat Kohli At No. 4? De Villiers' Clear Take

The Asia Cup 2023 is just round the corner and even after the 17-member squad was officially announced, questions remain over who will bat at No. 4 for the Indian cricket team. From Suryakumar Yadav to KL Rahul to Shreyas Iyer, a number of names have been suggested by both fans and experts in the recent past. However, some believe that it can be Virat Kohli who will change his batting position in order to provide solidity to the middle order. Former South Africa star AB De Villiers was in favour of such a move and in a recent interaction, he said that Kohli at No. 4 can be 'perfect' for Team India.

"I would be a big supporter of that. I feel Virat is the perfect No. 4, can keep the innings together and play any kind of role in the middle order. I don't know whether he would like to do that role. But at the end of the day, if the team needs you to do something and play a role, you got to put your hand up and go for it," De Villiers said on the '360 Show' on YouTube.

The Asia Cup will begin on August 30 as Pakistan take on Nepal. While speaking about the various contenders to the title, De Villiers had two clear favourites but he added that there are sides capable of pulling off a major upset in the competition.

"Pakistan and India are the favorites to win the Asia Cup. However, Sri Lanka have the ability to upset the bigger teams," he concluded.

Shah is happy that he has been taking Pakistan over the line on a quite a few occasions. "I will say that it is a very happy thing and we needed this win a lot. I believed that I can do it."

"I try to be prepared for such situations as I practice a lot of batting in the nets. I know that my turn is coming when all the breathing lines stop. So I tried again to make the team win and did it. I am just trying to earn respect and rest is all upto almighty," he added.

India's WC Squad: No Tilak, Sanju And Krishna In Ganguly's 15-Member List

Former Indian cricket team skipper Sourav Ganguly named his pick for India's ICC World Cup 2023 squad and it had some interesting exclusions. Ganguly decided to not include the trio of Sanju Samson, Prasidh Krishna and Tilak Varma - all three players who were picked for Asia Cup 2023. It included both Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul who are making a return from injury and were added in the squad for Asia Cup. India will start their World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8 in Chennai.

The former India skipper picked Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav as proper batting options. Ishan Kishan was the only specialist wicket-keeper in the squad with Rahul being the other option in case India want to play an extra batter in their team.

Among all-rounders, he picked Hardik Pandya and the left-arm spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Kuldeep Yadav was the other spin option in the squad picked by Ganguly.

In the fast bowling department, there were not many surprises as Ganguly went with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur

Ganguly also named three back-up options if any of these players are ruled out for any reason. “If one of the batters gets injured then Tilak Varma can enter, while if the pacer gets injured then it's Prasidh Krishna, while in the case of spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal is the option," Ganguly told Star Sports.

Sourav Ganguly's picks for India's ICC World Cup 2023 squad: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur.
