Former India Player Picks Top 5 T20I Batters In 2022, Excludes Babar Azam

India star batter Virat Kohli, who was going through a lean patch, returned to form in the year 2022. Virat ended his 1020 days old century drought after he smashed a ton against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2022. Since then, Virat continued his blistering form and finished as the highest run-scorer in T20 World Cup 2022 with a total of 296 runs in 6 matches. As the year has reached to its conclusion, former India batter Aakash Chopra has picked his top-5 batters of 2022 and undoubtedly he included Virat as one of them.

Chopra praised the former India skipper for giving brilliant performances during challenging conditions.

"Nobody would have imagined that Virat Kohli would find a place on this list. He struggled for form for years altogether, and his performances were quite underwhelming in the IPL too. Everything was going wrong for him," said Chopra on his YouTube channel

"However, by the end of 2022, he has turned things around in remarkable fashion. In T20Is this year (2022), Kohli has scored 781 runs in 20 matches at an average of 55.78 with a strike rate of 138.23. He was outstanding during the T20 World Cup. The pitches were quite challenging against Pakistan and England during the World Cup, but he still managed to score," he added.

The former India batter further stated that he will not be including Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on the list because of his poor average and strike rate.

"Going by the stats, Babar Azam should be the No.5 but I am not including him in my list. He has scored 735 runs in 26 matches and his average is only 32 and strike rate merely 123. Sorry! but I can't take him in my team. I am including Devon Conway's name instead at his place. Conway's numbers in T20Is in 2022 are unbelievable, had he played more matches in the format this year, he would have overtaken SKY(Suryakumar Yadav) to claim the top position," said Chopra.

Looking at the current stats and his own analysis, the top-5 batters picked by Chopra were Suryakumar Yadav (India), Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan), Virat Kohli (India), Sikandar Raza (Zimbabwe), and Devon Conway (New Zealand).

"Will Play For Pakistan...": Mohammad Amir Breaks Silence On His Future

Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir has expressed his excitement at the opportunity to potentially represent Pakistan again. Notably, Amir had called time on his international career in 2020 in protest over the "shabby" treatment he said he received from the then management. Recently, fellow pacer Wahab Riaz had hinted that Amir could be back in Pakistan's squad. "We may see Mohammad Amir coming back to play for Pakistan once again," Wahab was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan in an interview to Samaa News.

However, with Ramiz Raja, the former PCB chief, shown the exit door by the new government, Amir has finally broken silence on his Pakistan future.

"If Allah wills, I will play for Pakistan again. But I would like to play and perform well in PSL," Amir told the reporters at the National High-Performance Centre (NHPC) in Lahore.

Notably, Amir has been training at the NHPC to prepare for the upcoming season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

Amir thanked the interim PCB chief, Najam Sethi, for allowing him to train at the NHPC.

It is worth noting that Ramiz was removed as the chairman of the PCB earlier this month. A 14-member committee, headed by Najam Sethi, had been appointed to run the affairs of the game for the next four months.

The Pakistan government, through a notification last week, removed Raja following the national team's 3-0 whitewash by England in the Test series. The notification, issued by Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, has to be approved by the federal cabinet, which is just a formality.

Ever since Ramiz Raja was removed from the post of PCB chairman, several stakeholders of the game in the country have spoken out against him.

Watch: Australian Cricketer Takes Stunning Return Catch In BBL Match

Sydney Thunder on Saturday defeated the Hobart Hurricanes by a huge margin of 62 runs in a Big Bash League (BBL) match at the Lavington Oval in Albury. After being put into bat, the Thunder rode on half-centuries from Alex Hales (77) and Ollie Davies (65) to post a huge total of 228/6 in 20 overs. In reply, the Hurricanes could only manage 166, despite Matthew Wade's quickfire knock (67 off 30 balls), with Brendan Doggett putting in a real shift with the ball. Doggett ended the match with figures of 4/35.

He also took a stunning return catch off his own delivery to dismiss Nathan Ellis. The incident happened on the third delivery of the 16th over, when Ellis hammered the ball straight at Doggett, who reacted quickly and somehow managed to pluck the cherry.

The video was shared by BBL on their official Twitter handle, with a caption: "How's the reflexes on Brendan Doggett?! #BBL12".

Doggett also took the wickets of D'Arcy Short, James Neesham and Joel Paris.

With the win, Sydney Thunder moved to the second spot in the BBL table with eight points.

Perth Scorchers are ahead of the Thunder in the points table, courtesy of a better net run-rate.

Earlier this month, Sydney Thunder entered the cricket record books in the most unwanted fashion on Friday after being bowled out for just 15 in their Big Bash League game against Adelaide Strikers -- the lowest T20 score in history.

Chasing a gettable 140, Thunder's innings lasted just one ball shy of six overs, with five of their players failing to trouble the scorer.

Gambhir Wants This Youngster To Open With Rohit In ODIs. It's Not Rahul

Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir said Ishan Kishan should be India's first-choice opener alongside Rohit Sharma in the ODI format for the coming years. In his most recent match against Bangladesh in Chattogram, Kishan turned his first ODI century into a career-high 210. The wicketkeeper-batter converted his maiden ODI ton into a double hundred in just 126 balls, the fastest in ODI history. Now that Shikhar Dhawan won't be playing in the ODIs, Gambhir thinks Kishan should continue to play the role of an opener.

"I'm amazed we're discussing this because someone's got a double-hundred in the previous innings. The discussion is over. It has to be Ishan Kishan. Someone who can get a double-hundred in those conditions against a reasonable attack, especially at home, should play," ESPNcricinfo quoted Gambhir as saying when asked who he would like to see as Rohit's opening partner.

Kishan received a call-up for India's three-match ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka starting from January 3 to January 15.

"He got what 200 by the 35th over mark? You can't look at anyone beyond Ishan Kishan. He has to be given a longer run. He can also keep wickets as well, so he can do two jobs for you. So for me, that discussion shouldn't be there. If someone else had got a double-hundred, I think we would've gone gung-ho over that individual, but it's not the case with Ishan Kishan. Because we still continue to talk about other players. For me, that debate is over," Gambhir further added.

Despite Suryakumar Yadav's batting in the 50-over format not being as remarkable as his T20 performances, Gambhir thinks he may still be a valuable asset at No. 4. Suryakumar has scored 384 runs in 16 ODIs, with just two half-centuries.

"It's very difficult to look beyond Rohit and Ishan Kishan to open the batting, Virat at three, Surya at four, [and] Shreyas at five, because he's been incredible in the last one-and-a-half years. Yes, he's had issues against the short ball, but he's been able to manage it. You can't be the best against everything but if you're able to manage it and got the numbers going for you, you can't look beyond Shreyas at No. 5 and Hardik [Pandya] at 6," Gambhir said of his ideal India XI.

India's squad for Sri Lanka T20Is: Hardik Pandya (Captain), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (VC), Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar.

India's squad for Sri Lanka ODIs: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (VC), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh.

Rishabh Pant Undergoes Plastic Surgery On Forehead Day After Car Crash

Rishabh Pant has undergone a minor plastic surgery on forehead. He is currently stable and out of danger, informed DDCA director Shyam Sharma to NDTV. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter met with a horrific accident on Friday morning as he was driving from Delhi to Dehradun in his Mercedes Benz. His car caught fire after it hit a divider. Pant was fortunate enough to come out of the car in time, though he suffered a ligament tear in his right knee and cuts above his forehead.

"Rishabh Pant underwent a minor plastic surgery near his forehead. A 3-member DDCA team is reaching Dehradun in an hour. BCCI is constantly in touch with the doctors at Max Hospital and with Pant's family. He is currently stable and out of danger. We are yet to decide whether he needs to be shifted to Delhi or not," DDCA director Shyam Sharma told to NDTV on Saturday.

Rishabh Pant narrowly escaped death after his high-end vehicle smashed into a road barrier and caught fire on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. According to reports, he had dozed off on the wheel.

According to SK Singh the Superintendent of Police, Haridwar (Rural), Pant was going to Roorkee to meet his relatives. He added that the accident happened because Pant fell asleep at the wheel a kilometre ahead of Narsan towards Roorkee.

Pant was alone in the car when he met with the accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway.

According to photographs from the site, the car was seen in a badly burnt condition.

Watch: Babar's Angry Look After Journalist's "Yeh Koi Tareeka Nahi" Barb

The first Test between Pakistan and New Zealand ended in a draw after bad light forced early stumps on Day 5. The hosts declared their innings after scoring 311/8, taking a 137-run lead. The major contributions were made by Imam-ul-Haq, who smashed 96 runs while Saud Shakeel and Sarfaraz Ahmed scored 55 not out and 53 runs respectively. In return, the visitors made a blistering start and they posted 61/1 before the game was called-off. The result of the two-match series will now be decided in the next game that starts on Monday.

However, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam got embroiled in a tense situation during the post-match press conference. As Babar was about to leave the press conference, a reporter got visibly irked after being ignored by the batter and yelled, "Ye koi tareeka nahi hain, yaha sawaal ke lie aapko ishaare kar rahe hain (This is not the way, I'm making repeated gestures to ask you a question)."

Babar did not take the statement lightly and gave back a death stare to the reporter before the media manager came and switched off the microphone.

Coming to the match, Ish Sodhi grabbed 6-86 and threatened to give New Zealand victory in the first two sessions on the fifth and final day, but Pakistan fought on before declaring their second innings at 311-8.

That gave New Zealand a tough target of 138 to win in 15 overs, and the chase ended in fading light on 61-1, with Tom Latham unbeaten on 35 and Devon Conway 18.

Michael Bracewell was the only wicket to fall for three.

Sodhi was the star as he improved on his previous best of 4-60 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo four years ago.

Theunis De Bruyn To Miss 3rd Test vs Australia For Birth Of First Child

South Africa batter Theunis de Bruyn will miss the third and final Test against Australia next week as he is set to return home for the birth of his first child. The 30-year-old came into the side for the Boxing Day Test in place of Rassie van der Dussen. Batting at number three, de Bruyn had scores of 12 and 28 in South Africa's innings-and-182-run defeat in Melbourne. He also made headlines when Australian quick Mitchell Starc warned him for backing up at the non-striker's end during the second innings.

"Batter Theunis de Bruyn will miss the third #AUSvSA Test in Sydney as he returns home for the birth of his first child. We wish him everything of the best for this exciting part of his life," Cricket South Africa (CSA) tweeted on Saturday.

De Bruyn's absence means either van der Dussen could make his way back to the playing XI or the the big-hitting reserve wicketkeeper Henrich Klaasen, who has played only one Test, may be given an opportunity.

South African batters have struggled in this series. The visitors have been skittled out for scores of 152, 99, 189, and 204 in the two Tests so far.

South Africa trail the three-match series 0-2.

The Proteas were number three in the World Test Championship race but back-to-back losses have seen them slip to number four behind Australia, India and Sri Lanka.

The third Test between two side begins here on January 4.

"Captain Badal Diye...": Ramiz Claims Bad Show vs Pakistan Hit India Hard

Ever since Ramiz Raja was removed from the post of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, several current and former players in the country have spoken out against him. Ramiz too has been vocal about the changes in the PCB management after being sacked. During a recent appearance on Suno TV, Ramiz spoke on a range of topics, and slammed his critics for being foul mouthed. Ramiz insisted that Pakistan's performances were "outstanding" in white-ball cricket, during his tenure.

Ramiz also went on to claim that it was Pakistan who forced India into making changes in their cricketing set-up.

"We gave outstanding performances in white-ball cricket. We played the Asia Cup final, India didn't play that. India, a billion-dollar industry, was left behind. Tod phod hui, unhone apna chief selector, selection committee fire kar di, captain badal diye kyunki unko hazam nahi hua ki Pakistan unse kaise aage nikal gaya. (They fired their chief selector, selection committee, changed the captain because they couldn't digest how Pakistan went ahead of them)," Ramiz said during an interaction on Suno TV.

During Ramiz's tenure, Pakistan registered their first win over India in World Cups. Pakistan had beaten India by 10 wickets during a group match of the T20 World Cup in 2021. They went on to reach the semi-final, losing to eventual champions Australia.

In 2022, Pakistan reached the final of both, the Asia Cup (vs Sri Lanka) as well as the T20 World Cup (vs England). However, they ended up on the losing side on both occasions.

Laxman Hails Bus Driver, Who Rescued Pant, As 'Real Hero'. Tweet Viral

Rishabh Pant met with a horrific accident on Friday morning as he was driving from Delhi to Dehradun in his Mercedes Benz. His car caught fire after it hit a divider. Pant was fortunate enough to come out of the car in time, though he suffered a ligament tear in his right knee and cuts above his forehead. His condition is stable. A Haryana Roadways bus driver, named Sushil Mann, was among the people who took cricketer Rishabh Pant out of the Mercedes SUV after it crashed. Mann said he did not know who the injured man was and acted swiftly to arrange for an ambulance.

Haryana Roadways later honoured Sushil, news agency PTI reported. "We gave them an appreciation letter and a shield in our office when they returned to Panipat," Haryana Roadways Panipat depot general manager Kuldeep Jangra told PTI.

VVS Laxman, former India batter and current NCA head, hailed Sushil. "Gratitude to #SushilKumar, a Haryana Roadways driver who took #RishabhPant away from the burning car, wrapped him with a bedsheet and called the ambulance. We are very indebted to you for your selfless service, Sushil ji #RealHero," Laxman wrote in a tweet.

"Also special mention to the bus conductor, Paramjit who along with Driver Sushil helped Rishabh. Very grateful to these selfless guys who had great presence of mind and a big heart. Gratitude to them and all who helped," he wrote in another tweet.

Sushil Mann, the bus driver, told NDTV that the SUV was coming in high speed from the opposite direction and it hit the divider.

"I put my bus on the side and quickly ran towards the divider," Mr Mann said.

"I thought the car would flip under the bus as it was turning over and over before it stopped," he said. "The driver (Mr Pant) was half out of the window. He told me he's a cricketer," Mr Mann said, adding the cricketer asked him to call his mother, whose phone was, however, switched off.

"I don't watch cricket and I didn't know this is Rishabh Pant is. But others in my bus recognised him," Mr Mann said.

"After removing Rishabh, I quickly searched the car to check if anyone else was there. I took out his blue bag and Rs 7,000-Rs 8,000 rupees from the car and gave it to him in the ambulance," he said.

"Rishabh Is Stable": BCCI Secretary Provides Update On Team India Star

Indian cricketer Rishabh Pant suffered multiple injuries when his car collided with a road divider on the Delhi-Dehradun highway, on Friday. Pant, who was going to his home in Roorkee, is currently undergoing treatment at the Max Hospital in Dehradun. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had said that the government will bear the entire expense of Pant's treatment. Now, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has provided an update on Pant, following the horrific car crash.

Jay Shah took to Twitter and revealed that Pant is currently stable and undergoing scans. He also revealed that he had a conversation with the player's family, as well as the doctor who is treating on him.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Rishabh Pant as he fights his way back to recovery. I have spoken to his family and the doctors treating him. Rishabh is stable and undergoing scans. We are closely monitoring his progress and will provide him with all the necessary support," he tweeted.

Earlier, Dr. Ashish Yagnik of Max Hospital said that Rishabh Pant has minor injuries and is currently being treated for injury around his waist. He had also revealed that the player is out of danger and conscious.

Pant was part of the Indian team that had won the Test series against Bangladesh 2-0 earlier this month. He had impressed with knocks of 46 and 93.

He was recently dropped from the T20I team announced for the series against Sri Lanka and was supposed to join National Cricket Academy for strength and conditioning programme ahead of February's Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

"Are We Servant Of India..." Ramiz Raja's Huge Remark On Asia Cup Fiasco

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah had recently announced that India won't travel to Pakistan to take part in the 2023 Asia Cup, and also proposed the idea for the tournament to be held at a neutral venue. Following the announcement made by Shah, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had also threatened to pull out of the ODI World Cup, which will be held after the Asia Cup in India. Sharing his views on the same, Ramiz Raja, who was recently sacked from his role as the chairman of PCB, pointed out past incidents when teams refused to play in Pakistan, citing security concerns, and what happened next.

Ramiz urged the board members not to bow to India's demands and show some leadership.

"What is leadership? When Asian Cricket Council (ACC) has asked Pakistan to host a tournament and then India say they won't travel to Pakistan and shift the tournament to a neutral venue, what should be the response? Are we servant of India just because they are a world power in cricket? Should we listen to everything they say?)" Ramiz said on Dunya News.

The 60-year-old feels that the Pakistan team and the fans deserve much more respect than what they are getting right now.

"We will think, will we get isolated, we'll ask permission from the government then talks will move further. These are not signs of good leadership. The Pakistan cricket team is enjoying a great run, you have a good fan following, you have superstars, so please give your team and fans the respect they deserve," he added.

No Plans Of India-Pakistan Test Series Anywhere: Report

Various cricket boards have shown interest to conduct a Test series between India and Pakistan. The latest addition to the list is Australia after Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) chief executive Stuart Fox made an enquiry to Cricket Australia (CA) about hosting the Test at Melbourne.  However, a source from BCCI has revealed that the apex cricket governing body in the country is not planning to host a Test series between arch-rivals India and Pakistan. "No such plans for India and Pakistan Test series in future or in any country, if someone has such kind of wish keep it to yourself," a BCCI source told ANI.

According to ESPNcricinfo, MCC chief executive Stuart Fox spoke on SEN radio on day 4 of the second Test between Australia and South Africa and said that the club, as well as the Victoria government, had made an inquiry with CA about hosting a neutral Test.

It has been a long time since archrivals India and Pakistan played a Test match. The two countries have not played in the game's longest format since 2007.

As per the ESPNcricinfo, following the success of the classic T20 World Cup 2022 match between India and Pakistan in October, the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Victorian government have made informal inquiries to Cricket Australia (CA) about hosting a Test match series between India and Pakistan in Melbourne.

While the last Test match between India and Pakistan was played in 2007, the last international series in which the two teams participated was held in 2013.

Fox stated that the MCC would love to host the two countries in Test cricket after 90,293 fans packed into the MCG last month to watch the last-ball thriller in the prestigious T20 world cup.

"Absolutely. Three [Tests] in a row would be lovely at the MCG. You'd fill it every time. We have asked. We've taken that up with Cricket Australia. I know the [Victoria] government has as well. Again, it's enormously complicated from what I can understand, amongst a really busy schedule. So I think that's probably the greater challenge," ESPNcicinfo quoted Fox as saying.

"Wouldn't it be great that it wasn't just Australia-centric and Victoria-centric, that we're catering for all the countries and filling the stadium all the time. So we have asked. Hopefully, Cricket Australia keep taking it up with the ICC and keep pushing for it. When you do see some of the stadiums around the world unoccupied, I think it would be much better to have a full house and that atmosphere and celebrate the game with full houses," he further added.

Between 2023 and 2027, no bilateral cricket matches were scheduled between India and Pakistan on the Future Tours Programme. Pakistan is scheduled to host Asia Cup next year and ODI World Cup will be held in India, there is no official word about the travel plans of the two teams.

Babar, Raza Among Nominees For ICC Men's ODI Cricketer Of 2022

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday announced nominees for the Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2022 award. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, Australia spinner Adam Zampa, Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza and West Indies' Shai Hope are the contenders to win the award. The ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2021 is in the running to do a repeat in 2022. Babar Azam once again showed his prowess in the 50-over format, showing once again why he has ruled the roost at the top of the ICC Men's ODI Player Rankings since July 2021.

The 29-year-old Pakistan skipper registered eight scores of more than fifty in nine matches this year, three of which he converted into hundreds. He finished the season with 679 runs at an astounding 84.87 average.

Adam Zampa continued to show why he has been a vital cog in the Australian white-ball setup, finishing the year as the highest wicket-taker for his country in ODI cricket.

The leggie had his joint-most productive year in ODI cricket, matching his debut year tally of 30 wickets. His feat was even more impressive this year because nine of his 12 matches were at home, where conditions aren't ideal for spinners.

The 30-year-old started the year with a four-wicket haul and finished with a couple more to cap off a fantastic 2022.

Zimbabwe's resurgence on the international stage in 2022 was largely due to one man - Sikandar Raza.

Raza scored 645 runs at an average of 49.61 and a strike rate of 87.16, adding two fifties to his three centuries. All of his runs came against top teams that were dominant in the white-ball game in 2022.

The 36-year-old scored three centuries, all while chasing, two of which resulted in victories and another nearly taking Zimbabwe over the line against India.

Shai Hope made his ODI debut in 2016, and since then, he has finished every year as the West Indies' leading ODI run-scorer. In 2022, Shai Hope was once again one of the West Indies' few shining stars in a difficult year.

Hope did not have the best of starts in 2022, but in typical fashion, began to grind out runs in the second half. He finished the year with 709 runs at an average of 35.45, including three hundreds and two fifties.

England Star Trolls India U19 Team Over Run Out Incident, Faces Backlash

The Indian U-19 women's cricket team produced an all-round effort to beat South Africa by 54 runs in the first T20I of the five-match series in Pretoria on Tuesday. The series serves as preparation for both teams ahead of the ICC U-19 Women's T20 World Cup to be held in South Africa from January 14 to 29. Opener Shewata Sehrawat and Soumya Tiwari scored 40 each off 39 and 46 balls respectively to guide India to 137 for five after being asked to bat. In reply, South Africa only 83.

However, the match grabbed attention for another reason. It came in the 17th over of the South African innings when India's Mannat Kashyap ran out Jenna Evans at the non-striker's end. The video soon went viral on social media. Eventually India captain Shafali Verma took back the appeal and the match went ahead.

England women's cricketer Danielle Wyatt was not impressed with the incident. "Oh no I hope there's none of this in the u19 WC!" Wyatt tweeted. India and England have a history regarding running out batters at he non-striker's end. In September, India all-rounder Deepti Sharma had run out England's Charlotte Dean during an ODI game. That incident divided the cricket world on whether it was done in the right spirit.

Now, after Wyatt's tweet, the cricketer is getting trolled on social media.

The second T20I will be played at the same venue later on Thursday.

1st Test, Day 4 Live: Williamson-Led NZ Look To Increase Lead vs Pakistan

Pakistan vs New Zealand 1st Test, Day 4 Live: On Day 3, Kane Williamson and Tom Latham hit contrasting hundreds to propel New Zealand to 440-6 at the close on the third day of the first Test against Pakistan in Karachi. Williamson survived two stumpings and a leg-before decision before knocking an unbeaten 105, while Ish Sodhi was on one, with the tourists leading by two runs. Williamson's 25th Test century is his first in international cricket since he racked up 238, also against Pakistan, in Christchurch in January last year. With the National Stadium pitch likely to take spin on the last two days, New Zealand will look to press home their advantage in the first Test of the two-match series, their first in Pakistan since 2002. "Is This Dream?" India Star On Getting Promoted To Big Post For SL Series

India's T20 batting sensation, Suryakumar Kumar on Wednesday said his elevation to the post of vice-captain of the national side seems like a dream, and he would continue to play his natural game without being burdened by the added responsibility. Indian selectors made some major changes in the national white-ball set-up by giving the T20I captaincy reins to Hardik Pandya and appointing Suryakumar as his deputy for the series against Sri Lanka, beginning in Mumbai on January 3 next year.

Senior players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul did not find a place in the squad for the series.

"It (vice-captaincy) was not expected. I can only say it's kind of a reward to me for the way I (have) played this year. It feels good and I'm really looking forward to it," Surya told reporters after day two of Mumbai's Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra here.

Surya's first reaction after his father forwarded him the team list was of utter disbelief. "I came to know from my dad who is always active on social media. He forwarded me the list and also sent me a short message -- 'not to take any pressure and enjoy your batting'.

"For a moment, I closed my eyes and asked myself, 'is this a dream?' It's a great feeling," he added.

On whether the added responsibility will put him under pressure, Surya said, "I always had responsibility and pressure. I always enjoy my game and (do) not carry any extra baggage.

"It's simple. I keep (leave) all my thinking at the team hotel and the nets. Whenever I'm batting, I just go out there to enjoy my game."

"Had Lot Of Difficulties With Previous Board": Pak Star On Ramiz-Led Panel

Ever since Ramiz Raja was removed from the post of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman, several stakeholders of the game in the country have spoken out against him. Now, veteran Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz has also criticised the former PCB management led by Ramiz, who is also an ex-Pakistan cricket team skipper. Riaz, who has played 27 Tests, 91 ODIs and 36 T20Is for Pakistan, said the former management never paid heed to players' demands.

"We had a lot of difficulties with the previous board," Wahab Riaz was quoted as saying by Cricket Pakistan in an interview to Samaa News.

The veteran pacer said that he was made to feel unwanted. "We were told things 'You have no idea how difficult it is to adjust you, nobody would keep you in a team,'" Wahab said. "That made us feel as if we've some loolhay langhray players who have never achieved anything in the game."

Wahab added that former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja never responded to his messages or calls. "I'm a present cricketer, I have not retired. Why did he never answer me?" he asked. "If people working under you aren't happy, then that says a lot."

The Pakistan Cricket Board on Wednesday threatened to take legal action against Ramiz Raja after a war of words broke out between the Board's new management committee and the former chairman following his unceremonious exit.

"The Pakistan Cricket Board has expressed its disappointment over the comments made and language used by former Chairman Mr Ramiz Raja against Chairman of the PCB Management Committee Mr Najam Sethi on a social media platform and in a TV interview," the PCB said in a statement.

"The PCB believes former Chairman Mr Raja's comments are aimed at tarnishing and damaging the impeccable reputation of present Chairman Mr Sethi, adding it reserves it's rights to pursue legal proceedings to protect and defend the image and credibility of its Chairman and the institution."

Last Thursday, Raja was removed as PCB chairman by the country's government, which appointed a 14-member committee, headed by Najam Sethi, to run the affairs of the game for the next four months. Following his sacking, Raja alleged that he was not allowed to even take his belongings from the board office after the government suspended the constitution.

Ranji Trophy: Priyank Panchal Leads Gujarat's Fightback Against Chandigarh

Opener Priyank Panchal led from the front with an unbeaten half-century as Gujarat gave a strong reply to Chandigarh's 304 in their Ranji Trophy Group D match on Wednesday. Panchal was batting on 87 off 146 balls (8x4, 1x6) in company with wicketkeeper-batter Het Patel (37) in an unbroken 53-run stand as Gujarat were 249/3 at stumps on day two, trailing Chandigarh by 55 runs. Panchal was also involved in two key partnerships; first with Kathan Patel (47; 66b), and then Priyesh Patel (62; 108b) to take the team forward.

Earlier, Chandigarh managed to add 57 runs to their overnight total before being dismissed in 116 overs.

Lather, who was unbeaten on 68, was dismissed 13 runs short of a century, becoming Hardik Patel's third victim (3/39).

Shen Patel claimed 4/85 while Sidharth Desai (2/74) ended Chandigarh's first innings dismissing Hartejassvi Kapoor.

In reply, Gujarat put on an opening stand of 76 with Panchal and Patel before the latter fell short of his half-century after being dismissed by Lather.

Having shone with the bat, Lather was also the pick of the bowlers for Chandigarh and took all the three wickets to fall.

After trapping Patel lbw, Lather accounted for Chandigarh No 3 Saurabh Chauhan (11) with the addition of just 17 runs. But Panchal held firm and forged a century-plus stand with Patel.

Brief Scores In Ahmedabad: Chandigarh 304; 116 overs (Bhagmender Lather 87, Arslan Khan 56, Gaurav Puri 51; Shen Patel 4/85, Hardik Patel 3/39, Siddharth Desai 2/74). Gujarat 249/3; 61 overs (Priyank Panchal 87 batting, Priyesh Patel 62, Kathan Patel 47; Lather 3/62). Gujarat trail by 55 runs.

In Indore: Railways 274. Madhya Pradesh 243/8; 83.3 overs (Rajat Patidar 54, Himanshu Mantri 48, Shubham Sharma 40; Sagar Jadhav 4/28). MP trail by 31 runs.

In Nagpur: Jammu and Kashmir 191 and 75/3; 28 overs (Shubham Khajuria 39 batting; Akshay Wakhare 2/17). Vidarbha 272; 83.5 overs (Aditya Sarwate 75, Atharva Taide 74, Harsh Dubey 55; Umar Nazir Mir 5/39, Abid Mushtaq 3/66).

In Agartala: Punjab 203; 64.2 overs (Prabhsimran Singh 55, Mandeep Singh 41; Manisankar Murasingh 5/48, Abhijit Sarkar 2/57, Ajay Sarkar 2/57). Tripura 17 for no loss. Tripura trail by 186 runs.

Suthar stars in Rajasthan's big win over Puducherry

Manav Suthar completed a match haul of 11 wickets to compliment his unbeaten 96 as Rajasthan romped to a 101-run win over Puducherry in a Ranji Trophy match. A day after the 20-year-old propped their first innings total to 335 with a 97-run last wicket partnership, Suthar returned to grab the limelight with his left-arm spin in a match haul of 11/62 as Rajasthan bowled out Puducherry twice in the day -- 104 and 130 while following-on -- to seal a seven-point victory.

Suthar was on a song in the first innings en route to 17-6-33-8, while Ravi Bishnoi claimed 2/33.

Paras Dogra was Puducherry's top-scorer with a 68-ball 33 but once Suthar dismissed him, the rest of the batters fell in addition of just 29 runs. Their first innings lasted just 38 overs.

Following-on, Puducherry lasted 40.1 overs this time with Mahipal Lomror claiming 4/38, while Deepak Hooda bagged 2/13.

Suthar this time opened the bowling but Rajasthan openers saw through his spell. Lomror gave the first breakthrough dismissing Neyan Shyam Kangayan (17), before Hooda chipped in to open the floodgates.

Pandey slams double in 100th first-class match

Manish Pandey slammed an unbeaten double century in his 100th first-class match as Karnataka declared their first innings score for a mammoth 603/7 against Goa. Overnight on 90, Pandey continued his assault on the Goan attack to notch his double century off 183 balls.

Pandey remained unbeaten on 208 off 186 balls with 14 boundaries and 11 sixes. Opener Ravikumar Smarth struck 140 (14x4) and was dismissed by Arjun Tendulkar (2/79).

In reply, Goa were 45/1 in 23 overs.

Brief Scores In Puducherry: Rajasthan 335. Puducherry 104; 38 overs (Manav Suthar 8/33, Ravi Bishnoi 2/33) and following on 130; 40.1 overs (Arun Karthik 38; Mahipal Lomror 4/38, Suthar 3/29). Rajasthan won by an innings and 101 runs. Points: Rajasthan 7, Puducherry 0.

At Thumba: Chhattisgarh 149; 49.5 overs (Harpreet Singh 40; Jalaj Saxena 5/48, Vaisakh Chandran 2/39, Sachin Baby 2/4). Kerala 100/2; 38 overs. Kerala trail by 49 runs.

At Porvorim: Karnataka 603/7 declared; 148.2 overs (Manish Pandey 208 not out, Ravikumar Samarth 140; Darshan Misal 3/145, Arjun Tendulkar 2/79). Goa 45/1; 23 overs Goa trail by 588 runs.

Himachal bat with purpose after first-innings debacle

Himachal Pradesh's top and middle-order batted with purpose to bail them out from a hopeless situation as they were just 10 runs away from wiping out a massive deficit against Uttarakhand at stumps on day two of their Ranji Trophy Group A match.

Uttarakhand seamer Deepak Dhapola, who was unplayable on Tuesday and returned with enviable figures of 8 for 35 to dismiss Himachal for just 49 runs in the first innings, could not recreate the same magic on Wednesday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

At stumps, Himachal were 277 for four, just 10 runs away from Uttarakhand's first innings lead of 287 runs.

With Akash Vasisht and Rishi Dhawan batting on 73 and 32 runs respectively, the duo have, for now, ensured Himachal will not suffer an innings defeat, though with two full days of play left, Uttarakhand are in pole position to win the contest and earn full points -- and perhaps a bonus if they win by 10 wickets.

Earlier, Uttarakhand continued from where they had left off on Tuesday at 295 for six, with Aditya Tare adding just one run to his overnight score of 91 before being dismissed by Vaibhav Arora.

The other overnight batter Abhay Negi added 28 more runs and eventually the home team's first innings wound up at 336 off 75.4 overs.

With a massive lead of 287, and the fragility of the opponents laid bare by Dhapola in the first innings, Uttarakhand would have fancied their chances of finishing the game inside two day.

But the determination showed by openers Raghav Dhawan (32) and Prashant Chopra (43), rubbed off on later-order batters, especially Ankit Kalsi (44) and Akash Vasisht (73 not out), as they played sensibly to make amends for their first-innings recklessness.

Dhapola sent down 12 overs but only got the wicket of Ankit Kalsi, while left-arm spinner Mayank Mishra was the most successful home team bowler, returning figures of 22-1-85-2.

Brief Scores: At Dehradun: Himachal Pradesh 49 and 277/4 in 76 overs (Raghav Dhawan 32, Prashant Chopra 43, Ankit Kalsi 44, Amit Kumar 37, Akash Vasisht 73 n.o., Rishi Dhawan 32 n.o.) versus Uttarakhand 336 in 75.4 overs (Jiwanjot Singh 45, Aditya Tare 92, Abhay Negi 70; Vaibhav Arora 4/80, Rishi Dhawan 3/65). Himachal trail by 10 runs.

At Cuttack: Haryana 338 in 100 overs (Nishant Sindhu 142, Rohit Sharma 55, Jayant Yadav 41; Suryakant Pradhan 6/93, Prayash Singh 3/66) versus Odisha 204 for 3 in 78 overs (Anurag Sarangi 63, Shantanu Mishra 60, Subhranshu Senapati 42 n.o.) Odisha trail by 134 runs.

At Vadodara: Uttar Pradesh 258 in 100.5 overs (Priyam Garg 52, Akshdeep Nath 71; Bhargav Bhatt 3/81) verus Baroda 221 for 6 in 78 overs (Ninad Rathva 93 n.o.) Baroda trail by 37 runs.

At Sovima: Nagaland 166 (Chetan Bist 64; Pradipta Pramanik 6/43) versus Bengal 336 for 4 in 82 overs (Abhimanyu Easwaran 170, Sudip Gharami 104). Bengal lead by 170 runs.

Pranshu, Harshit lead Delhi fightback against TN

Young Delhi all-rounder Pranshu Vijayaran put up a gutsy show before twins Aparajith and Indrajith were dismissed in identical fashion by speedster Harshit Rana as Tamil Nadu reached 214 for five at stumps on day two in a Ranji Trophy.

Vijayaran, playing his second first-class game, smashed spinners Washington Sundar (0/36 in 11 overs) and R Sai Kishore (0/32 in 4 overs) to score 58 off 79 balls to take Delhi to a respectable first innings score of 303.

He (1/14 in 8 overs) then bowled on a good channel and got the dangerous N Jagadeesan (34) caught behind but it was Harshit (3/73 in 16 overs), who tirelessly dug it in short and induced identical miscued pull shots from Aparajith (57) and Indrajith (71), both caught at mid-wicket.

Tamil Nadu, however, batted with a lot of positive intent right from start as Sai Sudharshan (25) hit six fours in a jiffy during the pre lunch session before left arm seamer Kuldip Yadav (1/50 in 10 overs) got one to move away, getting a nick.

Aparajith and Indrajith added 86 runs with consummate ease as they kept the run rate over 4 runs per over.

Left arm spinner Vikas Mishra (0/56 in 12 overs) was once again ineffective as he bowled to a defensive field which allowed Baba brothers to rotate strike with ease.

However, credit must be given to big bodied youngster Harshit, who learnt from his erratic first spell and started digging it in short, trying to take advantage of the two paced track.

"I was ready to concede a few boundaries but plan was to keep on bowling the short ball and allow the brothers to play their shots and wait for a mistake," Harshit, who has been coached by former India seamer Amit Bhandari, told reporters after the day's play.

Both Aparajith and Indrajith committed to the short ball early but it didn't come to them at a pace that they expected and hence there was no power in both strokes.

Another man who would be very disappointed is Washington Sundar, who was dismissed by an ordinary delivery drifting down leg side and his tickle ended in keeper Anuj Rawat's gloves.

While Tamil Nadu need 90 runs with seasoned Vijay Shankar (14 batting) at the crease alongside Pradosh Ranjan Paul (2 batting), skipper Indrajith conceded that the five fours and three sixes hit by Pranshu in the morning hurt them.

"Yes, we gave 40 runs too many. In the morning, I was forced to bowl with spinners as we were running short on over rate. At this point, I am not even thinking about outright win and want to ensure first innings lead first," Indrajith said.

Suryakumar's 95 helps Mumbai reach 230 against Saurashtra

In Mumbai, India's white ball star Suryakumar Yadav smashed 95 off 107 balls to take Mumbai to 230 all out in response to Saurashtra's first innings total of 289.

Mumbai lost the first innings lead but bounced back to reduce Saurashtra to 120 for six in their second innings. Mumbai left arm spinner Shams Mulani once again did the bulk of the damage with four wickets.

Going into day four, Saurashtra lead Mumbai by 179 runs and would be looking to add another 50 runs at least to make a match out of it on a turning track.

The 2020 Ranji champions will be relying a lot on left-arm spinner Dharmendra Singh Jadeja and young offie Yuvrajsingh Dodiya, who took four wickets in the first innings.

Brief Scores: Delhi 1st Innings 303 in 97.1 overs (Dhruv Shorey 66, Jonty Sidhu 57, Pranshu Vijayaran 58, L Vignesh 4/50). Tamil Nadu 214/5 in 54 overs (Baba Indrajith 71, Baba Aparajith 57, Harshit Rana 3/73).

In Mumbai: Saurashtra 1st Innings 289 in 79.1 overs and 120/6 in 32 overs (Prerak Mankad batting 25, Dharemendrasingh Jadeja batting 24; Shams Mulani 4/50) vs Mumbai 1st Innings 230 all out in 63.3 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 95, Sarfaraz Khan 75; Dharmendrasinh Jadeja 4/70, Yuvrajsinh Dodiya 4/43).

In Hyderabad: Assam 1st Innings 205 in 56.4 overs and 182/6 in 39 overs. Hyderabad 1st Innings 208 all out in 66.5 overs (Rohit Rayudu 60; Riyan Parag 4/48, Mukhtar Hussain 3/62).

In Vizianagaram: Maharashtra 1st Innings 200 and 89/1 in 27 overs (Ruturaj Gaekwad 51 batting) vs Andhra 211 all out in 79 overs (Hanuma Vihari 49, Karan Shine 52; P C Dadhe 3/56).

2nd Test, Day 2: Warner's Double Ton Keeps Aus In The Driver's Seat vs SA

David Warner battled through searing heat to hit an epic unbeaten 200 in his 100th Test on Tuesday before retiring in pain as Australia consolidated their advantage against South Africa at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. On a scorching day, the hosts were 386-3 at stumps on day two of the second Test, leading by 197 after the Proteas were dismissed in their first innings for 189. Travis Head was not out 48 with Alex Carey on nine. Steve Smith (85) and Marnus Labuschagne (14) were the only wickets to fall. But worryingly for Australia, Cameron Green, who took 5-27 in South Africa's first innings, also retired hurt after a nasty rap on the finger from Anrich Nortje.

Smith and Warner's 239-run partnership took the game further away from South Africa, whose bowlers toiled in temperatures touching 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 Fahrenheit).

Opener Warner, 36, snapped a near-three-year century drought in typically aggressive and gritty fashion, reaching three figures for a 25th time after coming into the game under pressure on a lean run.

It was his first Test hundred since January 2020 and as the opposition bowlers tired, he battled the elements and converted it to 200 for only the third time.

His wife Candice told host broadcaster Fox: "You'd think by now people would know writing David Warner off is the wrong thing to do."

But it was an exhausting effort, as he passed 8,000 Test runs en route.

Chairs had to be brought out for Warner and Smith to rest on in the drinks breaks, with towels draped over their heads and ice-packs on their shoulders.

Warner needed treatment for cramp several times and retired in pain after reaching 200 and dropping to his knees, eventually helped from the field by support staff.

"The boys were cramping left, right and centre," Smith told reporters. "So, difficult (conditions) but nice to get us to the position where we are now. I think we're in a nice spot."

Attacking

Australia resumed on 45-1, having lost Usman Khawaja late Monday after taking charge of the opening day, with Green's heroics helping dismiss the visitors for under 200 again.

They were all out for 152 and 99 in the first Test in Brisbane, which they lost by six wickets inside two days.

Warner began on 32 and showed his aggressive intent with an early boundary off Kagiso Rabada.

Nortje was routinely sending down 150 kph (93 mph) rockets, smacking Warner on the head when he was on 47. The batter was given the all-clear after a mandatory concussion test on the field, with a lengthy delay as a new helmet was found.

But disaster struck two balls after play resumed.

Warner pushed Nortje for a single and came back for a second, but Labuschagne hesitated and was run out despite a lunging dive.

"It looked like a good wicket in general if you bowled good areas, over time you would get rewarded. But they batted really well," said Nortje.

"I felt the boys bowled really well... unfortunately it didn't go our way."

Warner put his head down to motor to 100, punching the air when he got there after a near-flawless knock characterised by his trademark strong running between the wicket.

Smith was not as comfortable, escaping on nine when he was dropped by wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne and then on 39 when he was given out caught behind only for it to be called a no-ball.

But he persevered to reach a 37th Test fifty with a four off Marco Jansen.

Warner upped the ante after his century and raced to 200 off 254 balls before calling it quits.

Smith departed shortly before his partner reached the milestone, with Nortje getting his reward for a hard day's work, with Theunis de Bruyn taking a catch at gully.
